The only other reason to read it is because of the entertainment aspect, and that is practically nonexistent. It also revealed the stark contrasts of different areas of Indiana. I laughed and I cried with the experiences of a very genuine family and the impact of the Irehe War in their lives. It told of the Civil War through a boys fkve of view that had to stay home with his family.

Tom and Eb leave their homes and they enroll into the army at the end of summer and Bill thinks about joint the army as well even though he considers the war to be pointless.


Jethro watches a war unfold around him and feels the effects of it on his community and on his own family. I did find the characters feelings very real. There’s no scaffolding that helps explain the issues behind the civil war.

Jethro then thinks about his older sister who was killed by a a;rils. I wish I could find my copy of this. This article is about the novel. As far as getting their point across, they did very well. Parents need to know that this beautifully written and heart-rending story effectively depicts the suffering caused by war.
