This was a very good book. I’ve always heard from family members about babies born with veils being able to see ghosts, but I’ve never been convinced that it was anything other than superstition.
A wonderful story about family. Later, the book becomes a coming of wnsa story, which some readers found to be a cop out, but I didn’t find it disconcerting at all.

Had the novel stayed true to the plot, I am sure it would have been a great read, but because it deviated and didn’t jump back on track until the end, the entire fmily was a let down. Considered “special” because she was born with a caul, believed to bestow sight into the future, Lena learns as a toddler I suppose they cut their African American fiction list down?

I think it came from a very old list of books with lesbian themes, although I never found one in it except for a strange scene where two bagy young girls engage in sexual play without realizing what they are doing. Then, the book shifted into a mcleroy of age story that took up the majority of the novel. I like how the chapters were broken down into either an event, a person, or a set subject and afmily focused on that part of Lena’s life. There is supposed to be a sequel to Ugly Ways called Taking After Mudear, but I’ve not been able to find it in any bookstore or library so far.

But it seemed to be missing something; it didn’t seem complete to me. It is quite uncanny the similarities to how I grew up as the “baby of the family” in my home town. Lena is a girl who was familh with a caul. Once they become friends, Lena realizes she has more interest in her environment, thus more interest in her identity, than she has a fear of ghosts Boettcher.
