I made the book my own. As the hours pass and he does not return the daughter’s recollections of family life slips from describing a stern, caring father maintaining family standards for the common good to a violent, unfeeling, obsessive man serving his own interests.
Has he been in an accident? He does not appear at six o’clock, which is birgut given his usual promptness and rigidity, and instead of eating the sumptuous meal the three of them wait anxiously for his arrival. Written in German in just after the Berlin wall came down and, one senses that the family are moving towards rebellion and the final ousting of bjrgit oppressor that parallels the end of communism in East Germany.
And instead of drawing everyone together, he has splintered his family apart by his funny notions and cruel ways. What the mussel feast does is photographically, slow as a slide show, trace a moment from the realisation that the father is not coming home to the awaited revelation as to why the chair is empty. The absence of conventional dialogue was not an issue for the unnamed protagonist’s narration was so rich, and I was especially touched by the raging undertone to this seemingly calm and accepting way of telling about these horrible things like they were no big deal.
But what if you were a constant disappointment? It is an incredible piece of literature in both its power and its story — rich, dark, engaging and elegant in its telling.

The absent, but oh so present father, was rather too close to comfort for me, but the atmosphere of a family under blrgit was brilliantly portrayed. It stands on its own for that portrait of the family. What emerges is a rather startling portrait of a tyrannical man, whose idealised version of what constitutes a family and family life can never reach his unrealistic expectations.
