In the end, I decided to give this book 4 stars despite some of my misgivings, because ultimately I think it’s one of the rare historical fiction books I’ve read that is relatable enough to modern readers yet still set in its own time enough to make you think harder about the psyche of the narrator and how it was shaped by her culture and history.
