In the story of Emilia and Julio, in any case, there are more omissions than lies, and fewer omissions than truths of the kind that are called absolute and that tend to be uncomfortable. I’ll just leave them here, as more ‘feuilles mortes’ from my own bonsai. The rest is literature. The novel can be read on many levels, and is delicately unsettling, the kind of story that lingers in the mind for weeks after being read.


The couple meet while studying, not just for an exam, not just for a Spanish exam, but for a Spanish Syntax II exam. I definitely recommend it if you are an intermediate Spanish learner and want to learn by reading. And if that seems almost too bonaai, Zambra helps his cause by leaving the story a bit ragged too, and by not having that be all there is to it.
