Enderton’s A Mathematical Introduction to Logic ( Academic Press, pp. ) rapidly established itself as a much-used textbook.
The chapter was pitched at a significantly higher level mathematically than much of the rest of the text — notably the chapter to follow on propositional logic — and made the text seem rather more daunting than it actually was. I first learned serious logic from Enderton, which Pen Maddy used for her year-long logic sequence at Notre Dame.

It is intended for the reader who has not studied logic previously, but who has some experience in mathematical reasoning. The author has made this edition more accessible to better meet the needs of today’s undergraduate mathematics and philosophy students. And yet the words “deduction” and “completeness” — arguably the whole reason we want to study logic in the first place — do not appear until after the entirety of the rigorous discussion of propositional logic, and even then only as an exercise.

For the usual motivation for separating off propositional logic and giving it an extended treatment at the beginning of a book at this level is that this enables us to introduce and contrast the key ideas of semantic entailment and of provability in a formal deductive system, and then explain strategies for soundness and completeness proofs, all in a helpfully simple and uncluttered initial framework.
We also get an exploration which can be postponed of the idea of proofs by induction and the Recursion Theorem, and based on these we get proper proofs of unique readability and the uniqueness of the extension of a valuation of atoms to a valuation of a set of sentences containing them perhaps not the most inviting things for a beginner to be pausing long over.
