Again I especially liked Scruton’s take on Hegel, but also Hobbes, Locke and then Marx, as well as the utilitarianism of Bentham and Mill, are all duly covered here. This book gives a clear timeline on the growth of philosophy over the years and good arguments for and against the different modes of thought. Fools Frauds and Firebrands is an update of Thinkers of the New Left published, to widespread outrage, in But I still struggled to totally grasp what filksofia of the major figures were trying to say and the significance of their thought.
Perhaps with Phenomenology is where his biases showed the most. With these philosophers, the writing got a lot more interesting, and from there on it only got better.
Nevertheless I found the introduction very appealing, Scruton’s “meta”-philosophy is very to the point- he touches on questions such as mdoerna there every progress in philosophy?

The philosophers themselves seem to be in dialogue in this book. I don’t recommend this as a first read for philosophy. In he published two books, The Disappeared and later in the autumn, Fools Frauds and Firebrands.

Modfrna a portrait of modern philosophy that is vivid and animated, Scruton introduces us to some of the greatest philosophical problems invented in this period and pursued ever since. Nevertheless, I could barely follow Scruton’s summaries from one paragraph to the next. One more positive takeaway is that the discussions on modern political philosophy were easier to understand and fascinating, especially the discussion about whether or not people have “rights” to anything or not.
The author’s breadth of iflosofia is incredible, and he uses his broader understanding of the History of Ideas to inform his portrayal of individual philosophers – showing how Hegel’s Idealism was influenced by and influenced German Romaticism, or how Hobbes’ skepticism about people’s innate goodness emerged fi,osofia the political turbulence which he experienced. Scruton is clear as clear as he could be, when he is dealing with the likes of Hegel, Fichte and the lotconcise and confident on his exposition of nearly all the great modern philosophers.
Granted this book is a “short” history of modern philosophy. He allows each thinker to express themselves and he emphasizes each philosophers’ contribution to western thought.

In detail, I particularly liked the parts on K A good overview of a wide range of modern philosophers. He identifies all the principal figures as well as outlines of the gilosofia intellectual preoccupations that have informed western philosophy. In detail, I particularly liked the parts on Kant, Frege and Wittgenstein. Sections on the British Empiricists were fillosofia – although if this is your interest Priests “The British Empiricists” is better. I was less enamoured of the parts covering Hegel and Phenomenology, as they were less insightful for me, filosofja then perhaps this may be because they are quite impenetrable without lots more work.
