Sure, some of the songs take repeated listenings to fully grasp, but so do Sondheim songs and that’s part of their depth and value. The title song brings tears to my cynical eyes every time I hear it.
Add to that the fact that freezing something which I see as a living, evolving piece of art onto a page feels much like pinning a butterfly to a board. I play it all the time Note for note transpositions of all the songs! When I heard that this CD was being made, I got excited.
Now that I’ve listened to it several times through, I’m warmed by its sound, and touched by the funny-poignant-deep-light songs that fill this recording.

The written rhythms of the melodies are as close as we could get to the natural rhythms of speech. I would play the song into his computer via two electronic keyboards, the left hand part on one and the right hand part on the other, so the computer could tell what was in the treble clef and what was in the bass clef.
