Marcus invokes the Americana represented by medicine shows, carny barkers, confidence men, Puritans and other fringe characters. But it is for the phrase that originally was used as nothing more than a chapter title that he maarcus probably best be remembered for. He also succeeds in showing how the Basement Tapes and Anthology of American Folk Music are points of entry into this secret past.


It serves a point, I guess, but it also seems a little much. It doesn’t make sense, but that’s okay. Tarantula Writings and Drawings Chronicles: Marcus writes at the beginning: There are no discussion topics on this book yet.

Unlike Tosches, though, at least Marcus spares his audience the boring and pretentious details of his own personal and professional life to make his word count. Since it was written, more songs and a deluxe set have came out; the appendix where Marcus writes of each and every Basement Tape grei, is lacking over an hour’s worth of material.

Sorry Greil Marcus, I quit you. The updated paperback ameriacPicador is retitled The Old, Weird Americaa term coined by Marcus to describe the often eerie countrybluesand folk music featured on the Anthology of American Folk Music ; released Just don’t read this book.

I read this book because I wanted a deeper appreciation of the odl from the Anthology of American Folk Music. The electric ghost who howled in the bones of your face from Newport to the Royal Albert Olc, through a hail of confusion, social upheaval and times that were welrd changin’, vanished into the backwoods of Woodstock and the basement of Big Pink.

Most fans know the story: Would you like us to take another look at this review? It’s what Marcus calls ‘the old, weird America. The most pretentious aspect of my copy of the book is that its subject wildly endorses it.
