Perez Reverte’s command of the language is superb and though we want to read it quickly to find out what happens, at the same time we want to savor his descriptions of each character and how intricately he weaves the plot. As everybody knows when you are an 80 years old aristocrat lady mostly interested in bullfighting and other “saraos” you have a lot of free time.

You would have got on well qrturo Bernard de Clairvaux and his gang of Knights Templar. There is no “detective” solving artur problem but the protagonists are really well drawn – their inner thoughts and motives so well described that these are just a joy to read.
In place of the vaunted “page-turning pace” we have a narrative that moves at what in fact is a very measured pace, even meandering on occasion — which is part of what makes it so very, very engrossing.
